Wear It Pink

October 23, 2015

wear it pink - Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and October 23rd is Wear it Pink Day. Breast Cancer Awareness Month focusses on raising awareness about breast cancer, recognising potential cancerous lumps in the breast, raising money for breast cancer treatment and support for breast cancer sufferers. The symbol of support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a pink ribbon. This is why the campaign takes the name ‘Wear it Pink’.

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer  in the United Kingdom. Breast Cancer Now is the lead charity for Breast Cancer Awareness day. The Breast Cancer Now website informs:

Breast cancer is the name given to cancers that have first developed in breast tissue. There are many different types.

Thanks to research, more people are surviving breast cancer than ever before. More than 80% of women with breast cancer are still alive five years after diagnosis but around 50,000 women are still diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Around 12,000 women die of the disease each year.

The official website states:

Every year, wear it pink raises around £2 million during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, by asking people to wear something pink and donate whatever they can. Since the very first wear it pink event in 2002, we’ve raised over £27 million thanks to the generosity of many thousands of people taking part in approximately 7,093* schools, 39,964* workplaces and 8,256* homes and social venues.

We use the money you raise to fund world-class research, by the brightest scientific minds, across the UK and Ireland. We actively encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing, and help our scientists and clinicians kick-start innovation. Together, they’re working to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage so we can stop the disease taking lives.
