World Breastfeeding Week

August 1, 2015 - August 7, 2015

World Breastfeeding Week Awareness Day

World Breastfeeding Week is a global awareness week supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation. World breastfeeding week highlights the need for concerted global action to support women to combine breastfeeding and work. Whether a woman is working in the formal, non-formal or home setting, it is necessary that she is empowered in claiming her and her baby’s right to breastfeed.

The World Breastfeeding Week campaign is run by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA). Full information about World Breastfeeding Week is available on the WABA website.

WABA calls for:

  • concerted global action to support women to combine breastfeeding and work, whether in the formal sector, non-formal sector, or at home
  • ratification and implementation of maternity protection laws and regulations by governments, in line with the ILO Maternity Protection Convention
  • inclusion of breastfeeding target indicators in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

With the WBW 2015 campaign, WABA and its partners at global, regional and national levels aim to empower and support ALL women, working in both the formal and informal sectors, to adequately combine work with child-rearing, particularly breastfeeding. (We define work in its broadest form from paid employment, self-employment, seasonal and contract work to unpaid home and care work).

How business can support World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Weeks offers an opportunity for any business that works with or has a customer base that includes young mothers and pregnant women. It is also something that companies with responsible and strong maternity benefits can get behind as a way to promote their maternity policy and equal employment policies.

Businesses are increasingly finding that supporting an awareness day or awareness week provides a marketing opportunity. Supporting an campaign such as World Breastfeeding week can build brand loyalty and improve employee satisfaction levels through campaigning and promoting specific causes close to their hearts.

For more information about ways in which your business can support World Breastfeeding week and other charity and not-for-profit awareness days or campaigns, please email campaign@bristol-marketing.com. We’ll be happy to talk to you about marketing opportunities and ways your business can develop and grow through supporting an awareness day.
